Launch of West Africa Blue's Living Labs

June 1, 2024

We’re excited to announce the launch of Living Labs—a new initiative from West Africa Blue designed to create, test, and share open-source solutions for the blue carbon market. By transforming our projects in Sierra Leone and Guinea into Living Labs, we aim to explore practical strategies that address real-world challenges in mangrove conservation and blue carbon development.

The Living Labs initiative is rooted in our commitment to integrity, equity, and transparency as we work to protect and restore mangrove ecosystems across West Africa. Through this platform, we will provide open access to methodologies, data, and insights developed in our project areas. The goal is to create replicable solutions that can be used by project developers, communities, governments, and researchers worldwide to strengthen the blue carbon market.

Our initial areas of focus will include:

  • Mangrove Assessment: Sharing cutting-edge tools and methodologies for assessing mangrove coverage, carbon storage, and deforestation trends.

  • Community Engagement: Building trust and fostering collaboration through proven community engagement techniques.

  • Biodiversity Protection: Offering insights into preserving and enhancing biodiversity within blue carbon project areas.

  • Improved Cookstoves & Smokers: Resources for creating efficient, locally-adaptable designs that help conserve mangrove wood.

  • Benefit Sharing Agreements: Promoting fair and transparent distribution of project benefits.

  • Gender and Safeguarding: Ensuring gender-responsive and safeguarding practices are integrated into project development.

We’ll be progressively rolling out Living Labs content on our website, so stay tuned for updates and resources designed to empower stakeholders in the blue carbon market. We invite you to explore these resources and join us in pioneering innovative solutions for mangrove preservation and sustainable carbon projects.
