September 24, 2024
West Africa Blue is pleased to announce the release of a new Living Labs Working Publication focused on improved cookstoves. Titled Improved Cookstoves and Smokers: A Practical Guide, this document shares key insights and lessons learned from our work in rural and coastal communities in Sierra Leone.
Key Topics Covered in the Cookstoves Guide:
Overview of the role of cookstoves in reducing deforestation in mangrove ecosystems.
Practical lessons from implementing cookstove projects in five pilot communities in Sierra Leone.
Preliminary performance results from kitchen performance tests (KPTs) conducted to assess wood consumption and efficiency.
Community feedback and user testimonial on the use of improved cookstoves.
Plans for scaling the project to additional communities and continued monitoring and evaluation.
The introduction of improved cookstoves has already demonstrated significant reductions in mangrove wood consumption and has brought health and safety benefits to users. In this document we seek to share our preliminary findings and provide a foundation for others to replicate and adapt these interventions in similar contexts.
The Living Labs Working Publications series is designed to disseminate work-in-progress materials that reflect our latest research and evolving methodologies in blue carbon projects. These documents offer preliminary insights for stakeholders, market participants, and researchers interested in the development and implementation of sustainable solutions that address urgent environmental challenges. As work-in-progress documents, they may be subject to change and revision as we gather more data and refine our approaches.
